coast experience

UT Marine Science Institute

The UT Marine Science Institute, located in Port Aransas, Texas, is the oldest marine research station on the Texas Gulf Coast. The UTMSI has dorm facilities, a visiting class laboratory, a visitors center and a research vessel (RV KATY) for visiting classes. The facility is conveniently located adjacent to the Aransas Channel so there is a jetty and beach close by. On a typical class trip aboard the R/V KATY, students collect water samples and analyze them for salinity, dissolved oxygen and nutrients; make plankton tows and bottom trawls and collect sediment samples. Half-day trips usually visit the bays and channels where bottlenose dolphins, brown pelicans and many other forms of life can be seen.
