Dear Parents or Guardians,
We are pleased to announce that your child will be participating in a unit on cryptology in the upcoming weeks. The students will apply their algebraic knowledge and skills to learn various methods for encoding and decoding messages. They will then learn how to implement the encodings on computers. At the end of the unit, the students will work in small groups to produce a final project that will showcase their new skills in cryptography. The student’s grades will be determined by the following rubric: Homework – 30% Assessments – 30% Final Project – 30% Participation – 10% There will be regularly assigned homework based off of the topic explored in the in class lesson. There will be assessments assigned once a week that are designed to assess the students conceptual understanding of the topics being covered. The final project is as described above. Group members are all expected to contribute to the final presentation, which must include a visual aide of their choice. This visual aide may require the purchase of poster board, colored paper, or markers. The purchase of these materials will be divided among the group members. All students will be expected to participate in all group assignments and class discussions. Participation will be based on completing assignments and staying on-task during lessons. There will be a guest speaker speaking on the uses of cryptography in the business world and as a form of security on Friday 02/30/2006. All parents and guardians are welcome to attend this special session!
