Dear Parent or Guardian of Algebra II student,

Today in class your son/daughter was introduced to a six week project unit incorporating parent functions, representations, and transformations entitled “To the Moon and Beyond.”  This project unit integrates core curriculum concepts of linear, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic functions with student ideas, understanding, and project presentations that put mathmathetical skills in real-world contexts.

Your child will receive all of the necessary instruction, homework, and assessments for this unit in class.  Regular project updates will ensure mastery of material and regular progress.  At the completion of the unit, student groups will present their projects in a formal setting with an audience of peers, media, and local officials.  You are encouraged to come as well, and will receive an invitation as the date approaches.  See the attached rubric for specific project assessment information.

The method of project presentation is intentionally not defined as to allow students to create original representations that highlight their talents, interests, and imagination.  Each group has the collective responsibility of determining their needs and acquiring their resources.  Students may require a poster board, computer storage media for a power point presentation, or scavenged items for designing a diorama or mobile.  There are many possibilities, and I encourage everyone to make use of our wood shop, art department, computer lab, and library for additional student project support.

As most of the daily activities in this unit overlap with assignment objectives, student groups will need to meet primarily to formalize ideas, delegate responsibilities, and finalize their project.  This will require brief meetings in class or by phone, as well as several hours of dedicated work to assemble the finished product, assuming all preliminary assignments have been sufficiently completed.

If you have any questions, please contact me by phone, 512-451-AISD, or by email, ellenlukasik@austinisd.org .

Please sign and return the attached form by Friday, December 3, 2005 to acknowledge that you have received this information. I apprecieate your time and continued support of your child’s education.

Sincerely,

Ellen Lukasik
