Dear Parent/Guardian:

Next week our class will begin a unit called Car Chemistry.  The idea is to use the automobile to discover some basic chemistry principles.  The lessons are designed to be a little different, so please take a moment to read this about my expectations of students during this unit.

All of the investigations and data calculations will be done in class; however there will be some writing and research assignments that will need to be completed at home.  Expect for your teenager to spend about two hours each week working alone or with group members on assignments.  For any written assignments students will be expected to turn in typed papers and may use the computers at the school if necessary.

Students will be making a couple of presentations during the unit and may choose to use poster boards or other visual aids.  Materials used for presentations will need to be purchased by the students.  All materials needed to conduct investigations will be provided by the school.  Students will be graded on group and individual work.  Group grades will be assigned for presentations and completion of group investigations.  Individual grades will be assigned for individual lab reports, papers, quizzes, and exams.

If you have any questions, please contact me by phone or email.  Please ask your teenager about what they learning.  It will give them an opportunity to practice for their presentation and you may learn some interesting things about how cars work.

Please detach, sign, and return the bottom of this letter so I know you have read it.

Thanks,

Miss CAS
