Dear Parent/Guardian,

We are pleased to inform you that your child will be participating in a six weeks unit project titled Acid Rain, What a Pain! How can we prevent it? This project is a unique way of integrating the core chemistry concepts they learn into finding a solution for acid rain, a serious environmental issue. They will look at the current acid rain situation in Northeastern United States and compare it to what could potentially happen in Texas.

Throughout the six weeks, there will be project work days in which students are required to do research for their project. On these project work days, they will be required to turn in daily assignments of what they accomplished for that day allowing us to provide feedback on their work.  In order to help keep students organized, you will need to buy your child a spiral bound notebook to keep data and notes in and a place for us to write continuous feedback on their project. Though students will be given many project days, they may have to do some work outside of class. If students do not have access to a computer and internet at home, they may need your assistance to drive them to a public library. Depending on what your child chooses for their visual aid or model, some materials such as poster board may need to be purchased.

Their final project will consist of a PowerPoint presentation, a written report, a visual aid or model, and a letter written to the state legislator. They will present their projects to the class during the final week of the six weeks. In addition, students will take an in class field trip so that the students can present their final projects to the community, thus bringing more importance to their work and extending the impact of the project outside of the classroom.

For a detailed breakdown on how students will be evaluated on the project and assessed throughout the six weeks, please see the attached rubric. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone or email. We look forward to working with your child on this unit project.

Sincerely,

Marilyn Alswede and Audrey Gonzalez
