Dear Parents,

We will be starting our five week projects “Functions in the Real World”.  The students will be separated into groups of 4 and each group will be required to do research on three functions: linear, quadratic and exponential, find their uses in every day activities and then give a presentation on each one.

The students will be given four days in class to do research and work on their presentations.  They will have the opportunity to go to the library, surf the web, and use the computers to do their presentations.  We will also have a number of guess speakers to come and talk to the students about how they use functions in their profession.  The students should be able to acquire most of the information needed and start on the presentation in class, if they are studious and use their time wisely.  However, they may need to work on their projects at home in order to complete the presentation on time.  It all depends on how much work your child and his/her group works on it during class.

The cost of the project is up to your child’s group.  Computers will be provided with internet access and PowerPoint if they choose to use this program to do their presentation.    However, if they choose to do a poster board or some other physical presentation, then the material for it will need to be purchased.

These projects are a major portion of your child’s grade for the semester.  A rubric is attached so that you can see what we will be looking for in the presentations.  Each presentation will be approximately worth 25% of their final grade, or 75% for the entire project.  So please encourage your child to work diligently in class and be prepared to work on these presentations at home.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact anyone of us.  Thank you.
