5E Lesson Plan #

AUTHORS’ NAMES: Tim Tesch

TITLE OF THE LESSON: PBI Project Lesson: Intro to Statistics, foundations of functions

TECHNOLOGY LESSON (circle one):        Yes      No

DATE OF LESSON: September 2nd

LENGTH OF LESSON: 30-50 min

NAME OF COURSE: Algebra 1, 9th grade

SOURCE OF THE LESSON:  TEKS

TEKS ADDRESSED: TEKS (A.1, BD) {gather and record data and use data sets to determine functional relationships between quantities, represent relationships among quantities using concrete models, tables, graphs, diagrams, verbal descriptions, equations, and inequalities.

CONCEPT STATEMENT: I want the students to grasp the concept of statistics and foundations of functions.  I want them to be able to understand how statistics can be used in the NFL and business.  Statistics are one of the most important aspects of the NFL and I want them to get an understanding of that.

This lesson will tie in with the project “what’s the math behind the NFL” project because they will need to understand statistics and functions to understand the NFL.  In the NFL statistics are very important because that’s what they base performance off of.  Functions are also very important because it consists of the different routes that wider receivers run during a game.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: TSWBAT: Understand that Statistics is a mathematical science pertaining to the collection, analysis, interpretation or explanation, and presentation of data. Also with prediction and forecasting based on data. It is applicable to a wide variety of academic disciplines, from the natural and social sciences to the humanities, government and business. They will understand the statistics and be able to analyze statistics in the NFL.  For example, Passer Rating, Yards per catch, Yards per carry, and Net Punts.

RESOURCES: TEKS, Algebra 1 book

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS: none

Potential Misconceptions

See if the students are grasping the concept of statistics

Do ya’ll understand statistics and how it is used in the NFL?

Positive and Negative

See if the students are grasping the concept of foundations of functions

How are functions used in the NFL?

Positive and Negative

Explanation

What the Teacher Will Do

Probing Questions

Student Responses

Potential Misconceptions

Explain in more detail what statistics are and how they are used

Which NFL quarterback has better statistics and why?

Positive but still might not understand the concept of statistics

Explain in more detail what foundations of functions  are and how they are used

Which NFL running back has better statistics and why?

Positive but still might not understand the concept of foundations of functions

Elaboration

Time: ________

What the Teacher Will Do

Probing Questions

Student Responses

Potential Misconceptions

Split students up in groups

Which quarterback would you choose for your team if you were a NFL coach?

Have good responses on why they chose a particular quarterback

Explain group assignment and have them work on it effectively

What running back would be more effective in a game?

Have good responses on why they chose a particular running back.

Evaluation

Time: ________

What the Teacher Will Do

Probing Questions

Student Responses

Potential Misconceptions

At the end of class see if they understand the concept of statistics and foundations of functions and if they did the assignment right.  Present homework to the students at the end of class.

Why did you choose this particular quarterback for your team?

Positive with good reason why students chose this quarterback
