Who should apply for this program?
Individuals who might be interested in this program include those who are already teachers or want to become teachers and wish to become more proficient in evidence-based strategies used to treat autism; those who are private ABA therapists or others in the field of autism seeking teacher certification or who wish to earn an advanced degree in their field; and individuals who wish to become board certified behavior analysts.

What are the benefits of this program?
The program culminates in a master’s degree in special education with a concentration in autism and ABA, a Texas teacher certificate in special education (if desired), and/or a Texas State University Certificate in Autism. Furthermore, The Behavior Analyst Certification Board, Inc. has approved our course sequence as meeting the requirements for eligibility to take the Board Certified Behavior Analyst Examination. Applicants would need to meet additional requirements to qualify for this examination.

What’s the Texas State Certification in Autism?
The Texas State Certificate in Autism signifies successful completion of the eight autism/ABA courses. Students must apply for the certificate when applying for admission to Texas State through the Graduate College.

Can I become a Special Education teacher through this program?
Yes, absolutely, with some additional certification courses.

What do I need to do to obtain teacher certification?
In addition to 36 hours required for the master’s degree, students seeking initial special education teacher certification will need to complete five special and general education pedagogy courses that include student teaching or an approved internship. You will also need to apply for a special education teacher certification plan.

Do I have to pursue teacher certification to participate in this program?
No. This graduate program prepares highly trained individuals to educate children and youth with autism in school settings, homes and communities. Graduates become teachers, specialists or consultants in public or private agencies, or in-home trainers.

What else is required to obtain a Master’s degree?
You must meet all Graduate College requirements and successfully pass a comprehensive examination at the end of your program.

What’s required to obtain a Board Certification in Behavior Analysis (BCBA)?
Successfully complete the 7 courses in our Verified Course Sequence in Applied Behavior Analysis, complete a qualifying Master's Degree, and complete the required professional supervision in ABA. If I’m currently employed, could I enroll in night classes?
Yes, our courses are offered during fall and spring either once a week 6:30-9:20 or twice a week 5:00-6:20. In summer, the courses meet every day, during the day, for about 1 hour and 20 minutes.
