Dear Parent or Guardian,   

 

Project Overview

This letter is to inform you of a project your child will be participating in over the next five weeks.  The project is entitled "Epidemiology" and will cover topics that include health issues and infectious diseases.  Students will work in groups to collect bacterial samples from around their school and will learn important characteristics of different diseases that infecting their environment as well as deadly diseases that have recently infected world populations.  They will cover topics such as symptoms, spread of disease (epidemiology), diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.  At the end of the five weeks students will present the information that they have learned about their school envirnoment to other students, members of the community, and local health administrators in a "Health Fair."

 

Grading

Grades will be assigned in the following manner:

Supplies

Most of the supplies for this project will be provided in the classroom.  However, we ask that you purchase a spiral notebook for your child to use as a scientific journal for recording information that he or she will be responsible for keeping track of throughout the duration of the project.  We also ask that your child brings to class every day a floppy disk to be able to save his or her computer work.

 

Time Commitment

Most of the work that the students will do will take place in the classroom.  However, students will be assigned short homework assignments throughout the week (no more than they are already responsible for).
