Week 1

Activity 1: Send home a letter sharing with families that their child will be learning about eggs and to extend it where possible at home

Introduce the topic, What is an Egg?

Have the students decide what they think an egg is with open discussion in Large Group

Classify different animals based on if the student thinks they lay eggs

Students will explore toy animals that have been added in the centers

 Chicken Drama

Introduce eggs in all of the centers

Matching game in small group with different colored plastic eggs and sizes

Students will explore eggs in centers

Present flash cards with pictures on animals and have the students share whether it lays eggs or not based on previous discussion

Activity 2: Chickens aren’t the only ones

Introduce the book and have discussion

Have eggs that are filled with animals that hatch eggs and have them role play the animals that are being hatched

Soak an egg in vinegar for the rest of the week and talk about what the students think will happen to the egg

Introduce the animals again from the previous day with emphasis on the amount of legs they have

Introduce the Graphing book series and read in small group. Practice graphing with small groups.

Graph the animals from the previous day based on the amount of legs they have

Review what has been introduced so far in the eggs unit

Discuss where different animals that lay eggs live and their home environments

Have the students create an egg out of clay

Week 2

Activity 3: Introduce a live box turtle to the class

Students will observe and record in their journal

Share the results of the egg soaked in vinegar

Watch a video of a mother turtle laying eggs with baby turtles and discuss

 

Students will begin their book about their clay egg

Introduce a fish to the class and have the students observe and record in their journals

Watch Baby Fish Drama and discuss

Read, What’s It Like to be a Fish and discuss characteristics of fish

Students will begin to decorate and paint their clay egg

 
 Students will continue to work on their  egg  book

Activity 4: Introduction to ramps and moving objects

Students will discuss what the definition of rolling is and the class will come up with a list of things they want to experiment and roll. Students will discuss what it means to roll and have examples of the objects that roll.

Students will hypothesize what they think will roll the farthest and what will not roll at all

Students will explore with rolling objects on the ground

Students will have the opportunity to change their hypothesis after exploring rolling on the ground

Students will continue to work on their  egg  book

Ramp Exploration:

Students will learn how to make a ramp and students will choose objects to roll while testing their hypothesis

The class will graph the results.

 
Students will finish their egg book

Student will share their egg presentations with the class

Students will share all the things that can be done with an egg

Students will make cascarones out of eggs
