Dr. Knudson Elected Fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology

May 14, 2019

After an already incredibly successful year, Dr. Duane Knudson, professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance, has been elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology.

The National Academy of Kinesiology is limited to 165 active Fellows who represent eminent American scholars in kinesiology and exercise science. Being elected a Fellow in the Academy is considered the pinnacle career achievement within the discipline.

Fellows of the Academy are those who have made sustained and distinguished contributions to the discipline for an extended period, usually with one or more signature contributions. In his decades in the discipline, Knudson's dedication to the field has already earned him fellowships in three other scholarly societies.

Knudson earned his Ph.D. in biomechanics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and held tenured faculty positions at Baylor University and California State University-Chico before joining Texas State as the Chair of the Health and Human Performance Department in 2009, where he is currently a professor biomechanics. Knudson has received over 20 internal and external grants for his research on the biomechanics of sport and exercise. He has authored over 107 peer-reviewed articles in influential biomechanics and kinesiology journals including the Journal of Applied Biomechanics, International Journal of Sport Biomechanics, Sports Biomechanics, Sports Engineering, Gait & Posture, Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, International Journal of Sports Medicine, Sports Medicine, British Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Sports Sciences, Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, European Journal of Applied Physiology, Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, Kinesiology Review, Quest, and Journal of College Science Teaching.

His research areas are in the biomechanics of tennis, stretching, qualitative movement diagnosis, learning biomechanical concepts, as well as influence and quality of research in biomechanics and kinesiology. Knudson has authored three books, 22 chapters, and 35 peer-reviewed articles in scientific proceedings. He has also authored over two dozen articles for professionals in magazines, journals and websites. His research has been featured in the New York Times and a documentary. Dr. Knudson has also been a successful administrator serving as associate dean (5 years), department chair (10 years), and receiving the 2017 Jerry R. Thomas Distinguished Leadership Award from the American Kinesiology Association (AKA). He has served on four journal editorial boards, President-elect and VP of Publications for International Society of Biomechanics in Sports (ISBS), and President of the AKA. He has been recognized with the outstanding young alumni award from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and has received the Southeast ACSM Scholar Award, SHAPE America Southern District Scholar, TAHPERD Scholar Award, and 2018 Presidential Excellence Award for Scholarship at Texas State University. Additional national honors include the 2019 SHAPE America Scholar Award, 2011 Ruth B. Glassow Honor Award from the Biomechanics Academy of NASPE and the NAKHE 2016 Dudley Allen Sargent Lecture. In 2016 he was also recognized as a Life Member of ISBS for his contributions to the field and society.
