For Kaitlin Whitehead, pursuing a master’s degree in exercise science at Texas State University was more than just an academic decision; it was a tribute to her roots and a step toward her future. Born and raised in Brenham, Texas, Whitehead’s journey reflects a blend of passion, perseverance, and purpose.
“When deciding where to attend for my master’s, it was a no-brainer,” Whitehead said. Her mother, a 1994 graduate of Texas State—then known as Southwest Texas State University—was a driving inspiration behind her choice. “Graduating from my mother’s alma mater was one of the most significant factors in my decision to attend TXST.”
After completing her undergraduate degree in kinesiology with a focus on applied movement science at the University of Texas in 2023, Whitehead set her sights on expanding her knowledge in health and performance. The proximity of Texas State to her home in Austin made it an ideal choice, enabling her to balance her rigorous academic commitments with her professional roles.
Currently, Whitehead juggles a packed schedule, serving as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Texas Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams while also coaching young athletes through Austin Juniors Volleyball. “Living in Austin, it’s nearly impossible to be bored,” she shared. “I enjoy being outdoors and staying active, and the city offers a wide range of activities.”
Whitehead credits the Department of Health and Human Performance at Texas State for helping her navigate her demanding workload. “The department has been nothing but helpful and supportive,” she said, highlighting the guidance of professors like Dr. Hamilton and Dr. McCurdy. “They’ve been instrumental in guiding me through this challenging and stressful period of my life. The professors genuinely invest in your development, offering advice and resources tailored to your career goals.”
As she approaches graduation, Whitehead is eager to take the next step in her career. Her aspirations include working as a Division I athletic performance coach, joining the WNBA, NBA, or NBA G League, or training professional athletes in the private sector. “No matter where I end up, I hope I can continue to positively impact the lives of my athletes both in and outside the weight room,” she said.
For students considering the exercise science program, Whitehead’s advice is simple but impactful: build relationships. “The other graduate students in your classes will be the ones who help you get through your master’s,” she emphasized. “Use this opportunity to learn from everyone’s unique career paths and backgrounds and to expand your network.”
With a strong foundation, a wealth of experience, and a clear vision, Kaitlin Whitehead embodies the spirit of Texas State’s commitment to student success and community impact. As she moves forward, her story serves as an inspiration for future students and a testament to the power of determination and support.
