Alumni Spotlight: Nigel Jiwan
Hope College Professor Reflects on Path from Saudi Arabia to Exercise Science Leadership
For Nigel Jiwan, the journey from the small town of Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia, to the forefront of exercise science research and education has been marked by passion, determination, and a commitment to improving lives.
“From an early age, I developed a love for sports,” Jiwan said. “Playing and watching inspired me to pursue a career in this field.”
That passion took root during his undergraduate studies in physical therapy at Manipal University in India, where he built a foundation in movement science and rehabilitation. But Jiwan’s academic ambitions didn’t stop there. Eager to deepen his understanding of human performance and physiology, he pursued a master’s degree in exercise and sports science at Texas State University.
At Texas State, Jiwan immersed himself in the Translational Neuromuscular Physiology Lab under the guidance of Dr. Joni Mettler. A neuromuscular physiology class sparked his interest in research, leading to opportunities to present findings at regional and national conferences. These experiences, Jiwan said, were pivotal in shaping his academic and professional journey.
“The mentorship I received from professors like Dr. Joni Mettler and Dr. Ting Liu was instrumental,” Jiwan said. “Their support not only helped me refine my skills but also solidified my decision to pursue a Ph.D.”
Jiwan’s time at Texas State wasn’t limited to research. He co-founded the Exercise and Sports Science Graduate Student Organization, fostering a collaborative community among peers. He also served as a graduate assistant for the Caminitos program, coaching Pre-K students in physical activity, and worked as a lead counselor for the Summer Autism Camps, gaining valuable experience with clinical populations.
“These experiences pushed me out of my comfort zone and broadened my perspective on how physical activity can transform lives,” Jiwan said.
After earning his master’s degree, Jiwan continued his academic journey at Texas Tech University, where he obtained a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology with an emphasis on muscle physiology. Today, he serves as an assistant professor of kinesiology at Hope College in Michigan, teaching and conducting research focused on improving physical performance and mobility across diverse populations.
Reflecting on his path, Jiwan offers advice for future exercise science students: “Build relationships with your professors and peers. Don’t hesitate to express your interest in research or ask for guidance. And embrace opportunities that challenge you—you never know what passions or skills you might uncover.”
Jiwan’s story is a testament to the power of curiosity, mentorship, and a willingness to say “yes” to new experiences. From the badminton courts of Abqaiq to the lecture halls of Hope College, his journey continues to inspire those eager to advance the field of exercise science.
