Growing up in New Braunfels, just 25 minutes away from Texas State University, Charli Fouts always felt a connection to her Texas roots. But her journey to becoming an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Texas State volleyball team took determination, passion, and an unwavering love for the sport she has cherished since childhood.
Fouts’ volleyball career began early, leading her to play at Northwestern State University in Louisiana, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in health and Exercise Science with a minor in Business Administration. It was there that her interest in coaching first took shape. While working with young players at the local club that had just opened in Natchitoches, she found a deep passion for guiding athletes, not only enhancing their skills but also fostering their personal growth.
“Coaching became a passion during my undergraduate years,” Fouts said. “I’ve always been fascinated by the human body and exploring innovative ways to enhance athletic and sport performance.”
After earning her bachelor’s degree, Fouts returned to her home state to pursue a Master’s in Exercise Science with a concentration in Physical Activity Literacy at Texas State University. The decision wasn’t initially part of her plan, but the encouragement of Texas State Head Volleyball Coach Sean Huiet persuaded her to give it a go.
“Honestly, pursuing a master’s degree felt a bit intimidating at first,” Fouts admitted. “But Coach Huiet sold me on the opportunity to work closely with the volleyball team and gain hands-on experience in collegiate coaching, all while earning my degree on scholarship.”
As a graduate assistant for the Texas State volleyball program, Fouts deepened her understanding of the game and solidified her coaching philosophy. Balancing the demanding schedules of team travel, practices, and academic responsibilities wasn’t easy, but the constant support from the Department of Health and Human Performance made all the difference.
“My professors were always understanding of the challenges I faced,” Fouts said. “They worked with me to ensure I could succeed academically while fulfilling my responsibilities with the team. Their passion for their research and their commitment to their students inspired me to dive deeper into my own learning.”
Fouts credits Dr. Mettler, who not only taught her favorite course, Neuromuscular Physiology, but also guided her through her comprehensive exam and oral defense. Professors like Dr. Griffin, Dr. McCurdy, and Dr. Deringer also played instrumental roles in challenging her thinking and opening doors to new research possibilities.
During the final semester of her master’s program, Fouts’ dedication and hard work paid off when she was offered an assistant coaching position with the Texas State volleyball staff. “It was definitely a ‘right place, right time’ moment, " she explained. She now serves as both Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator, helping the Bobcats secure significant achievements, including a recent Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Reflecting on her time as a graduate student, Fouts emphasized the impact that her friends had on her success and overall experience. She encourages future students in the Exercise Science program to embrace opportunities, build connections, and engage with their professors and peers.
“Building your network is a huge part of becoming a young professional,” Fouts advised. “Get involved, ask questions, and take advantage of every opportunity. Texas State is a place where you’ll find people who are deeply invested in your success and growth.”
Looking back on her time thus far at Texas State, Fouts is filled with gratitude for the community that shaped her journey. “I can’t put into words how grateful I am to Texas State and the Volleyball program,” Fouts said. “My aim is to help create a program that not only supports my athletes' growth but also helps them realize how truly special it is to be part of something larger than themselves.”
For Fouts, the journey from player to coach has been life-changing. With every step, she has found ways to give back to the sport that has given her so much—and she’s just getting started.
