Curriculum and Instruction

The Department of Curriculum & Instruction at Texas State University offers doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate degrees that focus on the preparation and development of teachers and teacher leaders.

Bilingual Education Program Students

Texas State University's first mission was to prepare worthy teachers for the schools of Texas, and for 125 years, we've been shaping educational practice and policy.

The Department's programs reflect our commitment to academic excellence and transformative learning for all students. We put Texas State University's role as a Hispanic-Serving Institution into practice by questioning deficit-oriented views of learning, teaching, and people. Our graduates learn to care for children and adults through culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogies. Together, we work toward educational communities that serve all children, families, and educators.

Our doctoral, master’s, baccalaureate, and certification programs prepare new and practicing teachers, researchers, and other education professionals to make a critical difference in Texas public schools and colleges and in schools and communities around the world.

  • Students in our baccalaureate (undergraduate) programs earn initial teaching certification. Through outstanding collaborative partnerships with local school districts, our field-based elementary and secondary education programs have earned national recognition.
  • Our graduate programs include traditional master's degree programs, programs that combine a master's degree with teaching certification, and professional certification programs.
  • The doctoral program in Developmental Education includes Ph.D. and Ed.D. options.

Our diverse faculty are known for excellence in research, teaching, and service to the field of education and to our communities. The centers, institutes, and partnerships we lead serve Texas State students as well as children, teachers, and families in Central Texas and across the state.
